How Wisconsin Municipalities Can Use the 2026 Election Security Subgrant

Wisconsin municipalities have 2026 Election Security Subgrant funds available, capped at $2,000 total. We can help with the two required basics: a compliant, municipality-owned computer and managed IT support through 2028.^[1]

What the Grant Requires First

Before spending grant funds elsewhere, municipalities need these four items in place:^[2]

• Updated Election Day Contingency Plan
• WEC-supported election security training completed
• Compliant, municipality-owned election computer
• Qualifying IT support to maintain the standards through 2028

The first two are handled through WEC guidance. The last two, the computer and IT support, are where we can help.

A compliant computer should be municipality-owned, running Windows 11 or another supported operating system, kept current with updates, and protected with basic security tools like antivirus, anti-spyware, anti-spam, and web filtering.^[1]

Grant Packages

To make planning easier, we have grouped a few common ways municipalities can use the subgrant. These options are meant to help cover the baseline computer and IT support requirements first, then put any remaining eligible funds toward practical election security improvements.

1. Compliant Computer + Managed IT Support

For municipalities with an outdated, personally owned, or unsupported computer.

Includes:

• New Windows 11 computer
• Initial computer setup
• 1 year of Managed IT support

2. Managed IT Support Through 2028

For municipalities that already have a compliant computer but still need qualifying IT support, this option provides managed IT support through the grant compliance period in 2028.

3. Other Eligible Security Items

For municipalities that already meet the required computer and IT support standards.

Potential uses for remaining eligible funds include:

• Security cameras for election offices or drop boxes
• Door locks for election offices or equipment storage areas
